When an important document requires the signature of someone who is incarcerated, completing the notarization can require additional planning and coordination. Columbia SC Traveling Notary provides mobile jail notary services at participating detention and correctional facilities throughout the Midlands of South Carolina, including Richland County and Lexington County.
We work with families, attorneys, businesses, real estate professionals and other parties who need documents delivered to an incarcerated signer, properly notarized and returned.
All appointments remain subject to facility procedures, access approval, signer availability, acceptable identification and South Carolina notarial requirements.

Please have the following information:
A jail mobile notary is a commissioned South Carolina notary public who travels to a correctional or detention facility to perform an authorized notarial act for an incarcerated signer.
Appointments at the detention facility require more preparation than an ordinary mobile notarization. The request must be coordinated with the facility, the signer must be available and able to personally appear, and satisfactory evidence of identity must be available.
Jail notary service is commonly requested when:
Every appointment remains subject to facility approval, signer availability and South Carolina notarial requirements.
Jail notarization services are frequently requested by:
Mobile notary service at the detention facility helps prevent important documents from being delayed solely because the required signer is incarcerated.
While each situation is unique, mobile jail notary services often assist with:
The notary does not select, prepare or explain legal documents. The customer is responsible for providing the correct document and obtaining legal advice when needed.
Jail notarizations require planning and coordination. Here’s what to expect:
Provide the detention facility, signer’s full name, inmate or booking number, document type, deadline and your contact information.
We review the requested service, number of documents, travel requirements and expected facility procedures. The estimated total is provided before scheduling.
We follow the detention facility’s procedures to request or coordinate access. Approval, scheduling and timing remain entirely within the facility’s control
Before traveling, we confirm who has the original documents, whether witnesses are required and what identification may be available to the signer.
Jail and detention-facility appointments include the applicable South Carolina notarial fee plus a separately quoted mobile-service charge. Your estimated total will be provided and agreed upon before the appointment is scheduled.
Pricing may depend on:
Facility delays, denied access or changed appointment conditions will be discussed with you before additional charges are incurred.
A notarization completed at the detention facility must meet the same South Carolina legal requirements as a notarization performed elsewhere. The facility may impose additional security, scheduling and access procedures.
The appointment generally requires:
The notary cannot provide legal advice, choose a document, explain its legal effect or pressure the signer to proceed.
Appointments at the detention facility are never guaranteed. Access, dates, times and approval are controlled entirely by the detention center and may be affected by housing classification, disciplinary status, lockdowns, staffing, available space and security conditions.
Columbia SC Traveling Notary has no authority to bypass, influence or alter facility rules. We coordinate the request and perform the notarization only when access is approved and all legal requirements can be satisfied.
The incarcerated person may decline to meet or sign. We do not provide legal advice, prepare documents or determine which document a customer should use.
Access may be possible, but every appointment must be coordinated in advance. The detention facility controls scheduling, entry and security procedures, and access is never guaranteed. Call or text with the facility name and your document needs so we can discuss the coordination required.

Timing depends on facility approval, signer availability, document readiness and notary availability. Urgent requests are welcome, sometimes within the same day for an additional fee.
Every notarization requires satisfactory evidence of identity. Tell us what identification may be available to the signer so we can determine whether the requested notarization may proceed. State Issued Jail ID's with Photos of the Inmate and an ID number can be accepted.
Appointments are subject to facility approval and are not confirmed until the date, time and total price have been accepted.
